Travel // A couple of days in Lisbon, 2019

May 13, 2019

Last week we had a few days in Cascais as part of a feature I'm writing for the tourist board, we booked our flights in an out of Lisbon so couldn't resist adding on a couple of nights here to end the trip. A quick post with a little update to our second stay in Lisbon before I write up the first couple of days. {you can see the full guide from our first trip here}. Lisbon is known as Europe’s sunniest capital so it was unfortunate for us that our visit had grey skies and so much rain! Luckily we’d seen just how amazing it was during that first trip where we battled a heatwave. And of course, whilst not as pleasant for walking around dodging umbrellas and puddles and slippy pavements, it didn’t take away from the beauty of the city or that unique vibe it has. We still had such an enjoyable couple of days. Plus, it kind of took the pressure off slightly, especially as we’d been before, to ‘do this, must go here’ and instead we just wandered around to a few areas we’d enjoyed last time, focused on eating really great food {hello pastel de natas} and soaked up some of this precious last time where it will just be us two.

We immediately turned to Airbnb, but then realised that with a late flight home that Airbnb isn’t always great for that with storing luggage. So instead, looked on booking.com , it was fairly last minute {we’d had to change our original flights as Ben’s Grandma’s funeral was on the Friday in the end} and luckily found a serviced apartment here at Boutique Chiado Suites. We really lucked out, it wasn’t expensive {just over 100 euros a night} and was better than most Airbnbs. In the best location and with a little kitchen big enough to prepare dinner and cook breakfast, a sofa area with a big TV with Netflix on, the comfiest bed I’ve slept in for a long time that’s not my own and a brand new bathroom. The ceilings were so high and it had original tiles and huge windows. We loved it.

We’d planned to go to Belém for their famous custard tarts that we’d loved so much last time at Pasteis de Belém, but it’s quite a mission to get to {last time we enjoyed cycling there along the river}. So looked up the next best ones here in the centre of Lisbon and serendipitously, Manteigeria was just a two minute walk from the hotel! Needless to say that this was our first stop. And oh my god, I’d forgotten JUST how good they are. Absolute heaven, {last time I discovered adding cinnamon when it was almost too late, definitely didn’t make that mistake this time around}. From there, we wandered across the city to Alfama, the oldest part of the city and the only original part still standing after a fire and earthquake. I stopped countless times for tram and tile photos along the way, forgetting just how charming and photogenic this city is. We found a flea market that was worth a little look, before the rain got too heavy and we dived into the Copenhagen coffee company and shared a salad for lunch. We realised how close we were to a favourite pizza restaurant we’d discovered last time, Casanova, and so walked back via that way to pick up a takeaway pizza we could have for dinner later on. That afternoon we relaxed back at the apartment before an evening wander for a few snacks to go with the pizza, a walk through the Baia... region and then gelato from Davvro {again another favourite find from last time which on this trip BLEW our minds even more. No joke. Best gelato I’ve ever had}.

Our last day was even more rainy so aside from walking to get enough steps up to justify a couple more custard tarts, we had a lazy morning and then after getting soaked, decided to call it a trip and made our way to the airport early to catch up on some work. Will share the guides to Cascais and Sintra as part of the rest of our trip soon!
