Christmas - A Festive Waddesdon Manor

December 01, 2014

Last year, about a week before Christmas Ben and I had an afternoon out at Bicester Village before stopping at Waddesdon Manor to see their Christmas display at dusk. I was blown away by it, how beautiful does it look lined with trees all lit up?

Waddesdon Manor is gorgeous all year round, it's a National Trust property in Buckinhamshire so if you're members you can get in for free. They have huge grounds to walk around and a Dairy that's worth a visit, there's even an aviary. The plant centre and beautiful gift shop is always nice and I bought some mistletoe there last year.

At Christmas though it really is something else. It was freezing when we visited but lovely to bundle up and walk around. There was a Winter light trail art installation by artist Bruce Munro which had some cool installations to see as it was getting dark.

How beautiful are these Christmas trees? Sometimes the simple ones are the most elegant.

Inside the manor, and at the dairy were a range of Christmas displays. The theme last year was European Christmas markets with lots of pretty lights, trees and all things festive.

My photos from inside the display didn't turn out very well, I think it was the dark black with the lights that made them a bit blurry. But I loved these reindeer and sleigh on the way out.

I'd definitely recommend it if you live around Buckinghamshire/Hertfordshire but book tickets advance online for entrance to the Christmas house. They get booked up quite quickly. If you haven't booked online you can still wander around the gardens and other bits of interest like the dairy and plant centre etc.

The house was built by the Rothschild family in a Neo-Renaissance style of a French Chateau, it looks like a castle with all the turrets. Such a spectacular manor house and setting.

We had such a lovely afternoon and definitely felt even more Christmassy afterwards. I'm looking for somewhere for us to go this year that will be all decorated, maybe Hampton Court or somewhere like that. Do you have any suggestions or traditions like this?
