Summer Day Out - West Wittering Beach to beat the heatwave {my new favourite in England}
July 06, 2017
Hello! I'm back blogging. Sorry for the little hiatus, we were in Lisbon for the weekend and this weather that we've returned to makes it almost impossible to sit inside on a laptop! But I have a million blog posts to write so I'm seeking shade today and getting back to it. First up, the best beach in England. Our trip to The Witterings a couple of weeks back.
With that insane heatwave when England reached over 30 degrees for like five days {part one, part two has arrived now!} that lasted for about a week, we couldn't resist a trip to the beach. We live almost as far from the sea as you can get in Hertfordshire so if you want to escape to the coast without getting stuck in traffic for hours on end you have to leave early. We got up and were on the road by 6am with our swimsuits underneath our clothes, a breakfast and lunch picnic packed and all the beach gear we could find. It's hardly ever 30 degrees in England, we're just not used to it so we wanted to escape the heat and have a dip in the ocean. The Wittering's had been on my list to visit for a while now so it seemed like the perfect opportunity. We took a Monday off work and escaped to the sea. Looking back on it, it was such a dreamy day. I wish we could do it every Monday! Have you ever been? I can't think of a more beautiful sandy beach in England with dunes and beach huts lining it.
There are two beaches at the Witterings. We'd heard more about West Wittering so headed for that one and paid for the beach parking {£6.50 all day which includes lots of clean toilets, drinking water and even showers}. There's basically one road in and out to this area of the coast so on a hot sunny weekend you should expect to sit in lots of traffic. We got there at 8am on a Monday so luckily it was quiet {but soon got busy, it was the hottest day of the year so far}.
We sat on the beach with breakfast, strawberries we'd picked from our allotment the night before and yummy croissants I put in the oven quickly before we left.
We had chairs, a big coolbag and an umbrella with us so left these in the car before exploring the beach area and dunes more first.
Beach hut love!! And you know that feeling of cold sand on your feet? You just can't beat it.
Is this really England?!
Bright blue skies and sand dunes.
Actual heaven.
It reminded me of Camber Sands {here} but Camber doesn't have the beach huts!
My dress is a couple of season's back but you can find v similar online here.
Summer days I want to remember forever.
Then we set up camp on the beach and found our spot. The tides are notoriously dangerous on this part of the Coast as it goes into a harbour to one side so whilst there are dedicated lifeguard areas to swim in, we didn't want to swim so sat to the side of these areas. As a result, the beach was much quieter than further up with the lifeguarded areas. To the right of us was the dog section of the beach. In this photo it was quiet as it was about 9am but it soon got pretty busy!
Sandals online here - they're the best for the beach and sea as you can go in the water with them and they promise to never ever give you blisters. Basket is French but similar here and in the sale!. Similar hat here. - a bargain.
We felt like we'd escaped to France for the day. I wish we lived closer to the sea on hot days like that.
We borrowed an umbrella and these amazing chairs from my parents
We ate BBQ leftovers for lunch. The best kind of leftovers I think.
I literally couldn't stop taking photos of beach huts.
We propped my phone onto the edge of one of them and took a self timed beach hut photo. I love it so much.
You know one of those photos that you'll always look back on and laugh at the thought of running across the sand with the camera ticking down to take the photo.
Thanks for indulging my beach hut spam, I just want to beam myself right back. If you live near the sea then I'm soo envious on hot days like today.
