Thursday - Marlow

September 11, 2014

If I hadn't have called the blog after my love of flowers and roll top baths, bunting would definitely have been a contender for it's name. Bunting and Rolltops just doesn't have quite the same ring about it..  Bunting for me is so cheery, it comes out for every celebration at home and you always know you're in a charming English town or village when you see flags strung across the streets. Marlow, in Buckinghamshire is one of our favourite places for a day out. It's nice year round but is especially good in the Summer when you can walk along the river and watch the boats in the sunshine with a picnic.

We normally start by having a wander around the shops on the attractive Georgian high street, a mix of cute independents {make sure you visit Mayther the card and book shop}, good charity shops and old favourites like Cath Kidston, Jack Wills and Susie Watson. You can pick up a picnic in M&S or Waitrose just off the high street or get lunch in one of the restaurants {the most famous of which being The Hand and Flowers}.

If you keep walking down the high street, you get to the leafy Higginson park which has always got lots going on, Marlow's famous bridge {in the background above} and the Thames. These photos are from a visit at the end of May this year on a hot sunny day.

Marlow is a big boating town with a rowing regatta every summer. If you go at a weekend it's fun to watch rowing teams in training going up and down the river.

We normally keep walking along the river {to the right of the bridge} until we find a good spot for a picnic. If you want a longer walk, keep going up to Hurley Lock where you can sit with an ice cream outside and watch the boats.

You can normally park for free at a weekend in one of the side roads around Marlow's high street, if not there is a car park by Waitrose which isn't too expensive.

Love a quintessentially English day out. Marlow upon Thames is beautiful in the sunshine.
