Throwback - Hitchin Lavender Farm

September 04, 2014

Hitchin or Provence? This was our second summer visiting the Hitchin Lavender Farm in Ickleford, Hertfordshire and I think I loved it even more this time. We went on a bright blue sky hot sunny day at the start of August and the lavender was at its peak, bright purple against the blue sky and smelling heavenly. Pick a path to walk up along with hundreds of buzzy bees and butterflies going crazy for the lavender.

You pay £4 for entrance which includes a brown paper bag and a pair of scissors each to cut lavender to take home with you. You're meant to cut from the bottom and sides rather than the top so that it keeps its colour and overall wow factor.

There are over seventeen miles of rows to walk through surrounded by countryside. We packed up a picnic and headed straight to the top of the field to set out a blanket to eat lunch with a view before enjoying the lavender properly.

I loved this view from the top of the hill, yummy food, miles of lavender and fields as far as you could see.

After our feast we set about picking our lavender. This year most of the lavender was the same variety, a deep purple but there were some slightly different shades. Last year there was also white and a pale blue which I hope they will bring back next year. But it all smells amazing and looks so pretty when fresh or dried so we were happy to pick away!

After filling up our bags getting our fix of lavender {and asking somebody to take our photo to remember the gorgeous day} we moved on to the sunflower fields!

Just when we thought the views of the French style purple rolling fields couldn't get any better, we got a bit hit of yellow with sunflowers added into the mix.

On our way out we had a look around the shop which sells cute gifts and essential lavender oil products, unsurprisingly all made on the farm. The bubble bath smelt amazing. There is also a small tearoom and a garden centre where you can buy small lavender plants.

We had such an amazing day and will definitely make it an annual visit! You can follow the Lavender Farm on Facebook for updates of when the fields are looking at their peak. You can also get married here, there are teepees at the bottom of the field, how amazing would that be!!

The next day I strung up our lavender pickings to hang and dry around the house, the smell is still so strong yet instantly calming.
