Personal // The Mantra's I live by these days...

June 13, 2018

I’ve been thinking about some of the things I’ve learnt over the past few years and some mantras that I’ve introduced more of late. I think we’re always learning all the time about who we are and how we want to live our lives. I’m not one for reading self help books but I guess subconsciously this is a little self help like? I’m thinking about writing more personal blog posts if that’s something you’d be interested in? It’s always hard to know when you’re posting personal thoughts on the internet isn’t it. Sometimes people relate but other times there are mumsnet threads criticising you, the way you live your life or taking things you say the wrong way. At the end of the day I’m just here sharing things I love and hoping that you enjoy following along the way too.

//  ‘Pay the price in advance’. My Dad’s most famous saying and one that my brother & I love. Work hard then relax. If it’s hard now, you’re paying the price in advance and you’ll reap reward later. Not just financially but in all areas of life. For a few years, especially through school and university, I lived by this. These days, I recognise it but also now recognise that I need to adapt it sometimes. When my to-do list is so long or can’t be finished in a day, yes it’s great to smash it out but equally now I tend to prioritise the things that need doing most but also take some time out. And know that it’s ok if there’s always things on your list which need doing. I think it’s inevitable as a busy adult with a business and house to run, life admin etc etc that you’ll never have an empty to do list. It’s just not possible. Imagine when I have children too!

// So now I’m really into being kind to yourself. You can’t pour from an empty cup. Work hard, yes and try to be as productive as you can but also take time out. Go for walks everyday as some sanity/head space. Go for lunch with a friend for a couple of hours. If you’re a hard worker which I’m sure you are, you’ll get everything done but don’t stress yourself silly over it. Balance balance balance. And treat yourself too!

// Be selfish and say no. There’s been a real shift over the past few years on mindfulness and putting yourself first. I definitely say no a lot more these days to a real mix of things because I never want to dread something or feel extra stressed trying to fit it in. My anxiety can really flare up if I feel like there’s too much to manage or committing to something deep down that I don’t feel comfortable with. Just saying no can lift so much pressure. It’s hard because you don’t want to be selfish, you feel like you should be saying yes to invites or helping others or taking on a new work project. Sometimes you have to. Sometimes it’s ok to put yourself first and people should appreciate that.

// You do you, and own it. The older I get, the more I realise that I’m not trying to fit in. I’m proud not to drink alcohol for example, to value my sleep and to be boring. Why would you change for anybody else? Own it! And I also love this quote which my friend sent me the other day, especially in a world of weird social media messages/negativity ‘you could be the juiciest, ripest peach in the world but there will still always be somebody who doesn’t like peaches’.

// Positive vibes only. I don’t want negativity or drama in my life. Everyone knows a couple of ‘those’ people who are drama filled or put a downer on everything. No thank you. I’m learning to distance myself from those people. Being away for 3 weeks in January when we went to Australia really made me rethink about the people who I missed but also who I didn’t. Sometimes it's hard when family are involved, but don't feel bad stepping back.

// Be surrounded by people who boost you up, my family have a really supportive Whatsapp group where we're all so proud of each other's achievements.

// And lastly, sometimes if I’m stressed or have a dilemma, I think about what advice I’d give to somebody else in this situation. I love giving advice to others so I should listen more to my 'other' self more.

And finally, you got this 👊🏻.

P.S. I’ve read this book called The Happiness Project in the past by Gretchen Ruben which was amazing and I also keep hearing great things about Fearne Cotton’s podcasts or book.

Do you have any mantras that you live by? Or lessons that you've learned over the years? My Auntie, who is 52, still always tells me how we're learning all the time and I love that idea. We're all just learning the whole way through.
